Scope and Content Tarbert Pier, Harris, Western Isles Tarbert, a village and ferry port on the southern part of Harris, lies on a narrow neck of land which saves the island from being bisected by the inlets of West and East Loch Tarbert. This photograph of pier, the main ferry terminal on the island, was taken in 1900 by the Victorian photographer, Erskine Beveridge. This small pier, constructed of sturdy wooden piles which stand high above the low-water mark, was constructed in the 19th century for the packet service (mail-boats and passenger ships) that sailed from Uig in Skye. Immediately behind the pier is a low, single-storeyed ferry terminal building with a hipped roof. The original ferry port on the island was at Rodel on the southern-most tip of the island, an attractive little harbour built in the 18th century where passengers were put ashore by tender (a small boat) from the Harris ferry. The pier at Tarbert was constructed to allow the packets to dock alongside to discharge their goods and passengers directly onto the island, and to provide a regular ferry service, twice weekly in summer and once a week in winter, from Skye.
