Scope and Content Top loft with sack hoist, Tangy Mill, Argyll & Bute Tangy Mill was built in the early 19th century next to the Tangy Burn. A small dam at the head of a waterfall leads the water to a high breastshot waterwheel (water hits the top of the wheel and turns it back on itself). The mill was used to grind oats for both human and animal foods. It closed in 1961 and was converted into a dwelling in 1983. This shows the 'top loft' (upper floor) of the mill. This space originally held the hoppers which fed grain down into the millstones. A chute from this floor also led down to the floor of the drying kiln. The trapdoor with central hole in the foreground is the sack hoist which was driven by power from the main waterwheel. It would close automatically when a sack had passed through. The miller has always been a vital part of community life, and thus enjoyed many privileges. Farmers would bring grain and oats for milling from which the miller took his 'multure', a percentage of the grain as payment. Working watermills are now a rarity in Scotland, as most modern milling is now done in large automated roller mills (which are not powered by water). Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
