Scope and Content Tangy Mill, Argyll & Bute, from south-east Tangy Mill was built in the early 19th century next to the Tangy Burn. A small dam at the head of a waterfall leads the water to a high breastshot waterwheel (water hits the top of the wheel and turns it back on itself). The mill was used to grind oats for both human and animal foods. It closed in 1961 and was converted into a dwelling in 1983. This shows the mill built into the slope of a bank, with the deep waterwheel pit on the right. The slope allows access to both the bottom and middle lofts via stone steps. The walls of this L-plan mill are built from whinstone rubble bonded by lime mortar, and the dressings are cut from local Kilkivan stone. On the roof is a conical ventilator above the drying kiln. The lower loft contained the gear cupboard which transferred the power of the waterwheel to other parts of the mill, the middle loft contained the two pairs of millstones which ground the oats, and access through to the drying floor of the kiln (where oats were dried before milling) and the top floor contained the hoppers for the millstones, storage space for sacks of oats, and the sack hoist.
