Scope and Content Millstone, Tangy Mill, Argyll & Bute Tangy Mill was built in the early 19th century next to the Tangy Burn. A small dam at the head of a waterfall leads the water to a high breastshot waterwheel (water hits the top of the wheel and turns it back on itself). The mill was used to grind oats for both human and animal foods. It closed in 1961 and was converted into a dwelling in 1983. This shows one of the two pairs of millstones on the first floor (or 'middle loft') of the mill. Power is transferred by gears from the waterwheel outside to turn the millstones. The wooden frame over the stone is known as a 'horse', and supports the hopper which feeds oats into the centre of the stones. At Tangy Mill, oats would first be ground on a soft millstone known as a Peak stone, which produced coarse cattle meal. The harder French burrstone millstone would be used to produce a much finer product. The stones are enclosed in wooden covers to retain the oats during grinding, with a scraper below to direct the ground oats downstairs for bagging or further processing.
