Scope and Content Drawing showing east elevation and section from east of Tangy Mill, Argyll & Bute Tangy Mill was built in the early 19th century next to the Tangy Burn. A small dam at the head of a waterfall leads the water to a high breastshot waterwheel (water hits the top of the wheel and turns it back on itself). The mill was used to grind oats for both human and animal foods. It closed in 1961 and was converted into a dwelling in 1983. The top drawing shows the east side of the mill with its waterwheel and waterwheel pit. The water enters via the lade and sluice gate on the right. On the roof is a conical ventilator above the kiln. The lower section drawing shows how power from the wheel is transferred to the gears which drive the stones and machinery of the mill, and the internal structure of the kiln, invert, drying floor and ventilator. The eight-arm mill-wheel is made from wood and iron and measures 1.25m wide by 5.44m in diameter. Various types of waterwheel are found throughout Scotland. Vertical wheels are referred to as overshot, breastshot and undershot, depending on the point of the wheel at which the weight of water is directed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
