Scope and Content New Barony Corn Mill, Boardhouse Mills, Birsay, Orkney Islands, from south-east Boardhouse Mills consists of New Barony Corn Mill, Old Barony Corn Mill and Boardhouse Threshing Mill. The main block, New Barony Corn Mill, was built in 1873, but milling had taken place on this site for many years previous to this. The mill contains three pairs of millstones powered by a 4.3m-diameter overshot waterwheel (water hits the wheel at the top). This shows the main block of the mill. The building is three-storeyed and constructed from rubble. To the right can be seen the kiln section, with a large ventilator on the roof. Within this part of the building grain is dried on pierced tiles using heat from a firebox below burning smokeless fuel and waste husks. The two smaller mills at Boardhouse date from the 18th century, and were used to grind corn and thresh grain. Both were powered by mid-breastshot wheels (water hits the wheel halfway up the side). The mill complex also contains a mill pond, miller's house, stables, byres, an extra kiln and a cart shed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
