Scope and Content Waterwheel, New Barony Corn Mill, Boardhouse Mills, Birsay, Orkney Islands Boardhouse Mills consists of New Barony Corn Mill, Old Barony Corn Mill and Boardhouse Threshing Mill. The main block, New Barony Corn Mill, was built in 1873, but milling had taken place on this site for many years previous to this. The mill contains three pairs of millstones powered by a 4.3m-diameter overshot waterwheel (water hits the wheel at the top). This shows the waterwheel in use, with water flowing onto the top of the wheel from the lade. The speed of the mill is being regulated by allowing some water to pour down from the lade through a trap door (right) operated from within the mill. This stops the wheel from running too fast. The two smaller mills at Boardhouse date from the 18th century, and were used to grind corn and thresh grain. Both were powered by mid-breastshot wheels (water hits the wheel halfway up the side). The mill complex also contains a mill pond, miller's house, stables, byres, an extra kiln and a cart shed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
