Scope and Content Duty free warehouses, still house block and tun room from south-east, North British Distillery, Wheatfield Road, Edinburgh The North British Distillery was established by a group of independent whisky blenders in 1885 to produce a reliable supply of grain whisky for their blends. Production began in 1887, and the first Saladin maltings in Scotland were installed here in 1948. The site was renovated in 1992, and continues to create whisky for many famous blends. This elevated view, taken from the top of the south-west floodlight tower of Tynecastle stadium, shows the rows of five-storeyed warehouses where whisky is matured in oak barrels before being bottled for sale. The grey concrete building (top right) with the checked walls is the tun room, and the still house is the cream-coloured building to the left of this. Blended whisky is made from a variety of grains: either corn, wheat, rye, maize or barley. Most blends contain about 40% malt whisky (produced using malted barley alone) and 60% grain spirit. Expert blenders mix together whisky from various distilleries to produce new blends or to check that an established brand maintains a consistent taste. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
