Scope and Content Farmhouse, Wester Kittochside Farm, South Lanarkshire, from south-east Wester Kittochside Farm is a rare example of a farm whose buildings span three centuries of agricultural change from the late 18th-century improvement period to modern times. Recent developments, however, have hardly touched it and the farm, gifted to The National Trust for Scotland in 1992 and now supporting the Museum of Scottish Country Life, is rare in having such intact examples of original buildings. The front elevation of the elegant farmhouse dated 1783 is viewed here from the south-east. The house, remarkably country house-like for a farmhouse, is two-storeyed with a cellar and attic, and a kitchen addition of 1906. It is symmetrical, of five bays and with a central pediment. The glazed porch is also a later addition. The façade is of formal ashlar masonry with prominent quoins (corner stones). Accounts of 1783 show payment of £45.12.7 to Hendry Granger and Tom Lochore for 'building my house'. There has been a dwelling here since at least 1567 when John Reid was tenant. Reids maintained the property for another four centuries until the death of James Reid in 1982, and the subsequent gifting of the house by his widow Margaret in 1992.
