Scope and Content Island House, Heylipol, Tiree, Argyll & Bute, from the south Island House, an isolated house on a man-made peninsula in Loch an Eilein near Heylipol, occupies the site of a medieval castle. The house was built in 1748 by the 3rd Duke of Argyll as a residence for his factor on the island, and has been subsequently remodelled and enlarged. The Victorian photographer, Erskine Beveridge, photographed the house c.1890. This two-storeyed, harled and lime-washed house, without any architectural pretension, was originally built to a rectangular plan with a stair-turret to the south. A single-storeyed range of L-plan offices (left) was added to the west gable in 1769, and two gabled projections were added to the south front in the 19th century. The 3rd Duke of Argyll, owner of Tiree, decided to build a permanent residence for his factor or agent on the island that would also incorporate rooms for public business, a court-room, a girnal or store for meal and a prison cell for criminals awaiting transport to Inveraray. The site occupied by the house was originally an island reached by a causeway and bridge, but at some date between 1768 and 1794 this approach was filled in by forced labour, and widened to form the neck of a peninsula.
