Scope and Content Cottage, Lismore, Argyll & Bute Lismore, a long narrow island lying between Loch Linnhe and the Lynn of Lorn, has a scattered settlement of cottages, crofts and farms. This photograph of an island cottage, typical of the traditional cottages in Lorn and on the mainland of Argyll, was taken in 1883 by the Victorian photographer, Erskine Beveridge. This picturesque, gable-ended, stone-built cottage dates from the early 19th century. The thatch of the roof is carried over the front edge of the wall-top to form overhanging eaves, and fixed by a network of ropes of straw or grass criss-crossed over the roof and held in place at the gable ends. The base of the thatch is anchored by a fringe of stone weights. The three-bayed exterior reflects a simple tripartite internal division of kitchen and room on either side of a small central bedroom. The end rooms have fireplaces. The thatch was formed from whatever material was locally available - straw, heather, bracken or rushes - and laid over a turf base, the turfs being laid on wooden roof timbers with their grass side facing downwards. The thatch was gathered and arranged in bundles, and carefully placed and tied in position in a series of uniformly thick rows. A heather fringe was often used at the eaves to help protect the vulnerable wall-head from excess rainwater. Depending on the material used, the thatch could last for a generation before needing to be replaced. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
