Scope and Content Galmisdale, Eigg, Highland Galmisdale, an area of open moorland in the south-east of Eigg, is dominated by the dramatic mass of An Sgurr, the island's highest peak which rises 400m above sea level. The Victorian photographer, Erskine Beveridge, visited Eigg c.1890, providing one of the oldest known photographic records of the island. The track to Glamisdale leads to the estate farm (centre), an early 19th-century, rubble-built, three-bayed farmhouse with an upper row of dormer windows. The low range of outbuildings (right) are constructed in the traditional island style with thick round-cornered stone walls and thatched roofs. In the early 1890s, Eigg was owned by Dr Hugh MacPherson, professor of Greek at Aberdeen University, who bought the island in 1829 for £15,000. MacPherson, who spent much of his time on Eigg, lived in a pair of converted cottages near the pier at Glamisdale. His main source of profit was from the large farms, which reared cattle and produced cereal crops (mainly oats) and potatoes. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
