Scope and Content Portnacroish, Argyll & Bute, looking west Portnacroish, a tiny village at the head of the broad mountain valley of Strath Appin, lies near Loch Laich on the west Appin coast. This photograph of the village was taken in 1883 by the Victorian photographer, Erskine Beveridge. The village lies on either side of the narrow road that winds south-east from the coast along the Strath of Appin to Loch Creran. Strathappin House, an early 19th-century two-storeyed manse, has a prime position at the foot of a small hill with views down the valley. The gable-ended Free Church, dating from 1846, can be seen on the left. In the late 19th century, most of the land along the Strath of Appin was tenanted and worked by small farmers. Sheep and cattle were raised, with horses kept for ploughing. The main crops grown were oats, potatoes, turnips and hay, most of these being consumed on the farms or used for winter feed for the animals. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
