Scope and Content Strathappin House, Portnacroish, Argyll & Bute, looking south-east from the garden Strathappin House stands at Portnacroish, a tiny village at the head of the broad mountain valley of Strath Appin near Loch Laich on the west coast of Appin. This photograph, taken from the garden of the house in 1882, is by the Victorian photographer, Erskine Beveridge. This early 19th-century two-storeyed manse sits in the shelter of a small hill with a south-east orientation to take advantage of the splendid views down the valley, an area famed for its scenery. The Strath of Appin, bordered to the north and south by sea lochs, runs from Portnacroish to Loch Creran. It is essentially Highland country, with arable flats bordering the seashore, and grazings for sheep (and some cattle) stretching high up onto the enclosing hills and moors. In the late 19th century, the valley was tenanted and worked by small farmers with mainly sheep and cattle (dairy and beef) raised, and oats, potatoes, turnips and hay grown.
