Scope and Content Round Square, Aden House, Aberdeenshire From the 1750s to 1937 the Russell family built up the estate of Aden to a 4,000 hectare mix of private policies, farmland and woodland. Since 1980, 92 hectares of the estate has been managed by the local council as a country park and the stables, which date from 1800, have been renovated and turned into a museum of agriculture. The west wing of the stables extending out from the bellcote is viewed here from the south-west. Ruined and roofless at the time this photograph was taken, the building was still of outstanding architectural merit. In this side of the court only a quarter of the 'round square' was built. A porte-cochère (covered entry for carriages) was added to the mansion house in 1832-3 and the court was roofed as a central hall. The west and north lodges of the estate were probably also built at this time by Smith, the north lodge having a particularly interesting Greek Revival portico. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
