Scope and Content Brick conveyor, Broadlie Brick Works, Dalry, North Ayrshire Auchinlea Quames & Brickworks Ltd started Broadlie Brick Works in 1938 and operated the business until just before World War II when Broadlie Brick Company took over. A Kenneth & Sons Ltd became the owner in the 1950s and ran the business to 1978 when the Scottish Brick Corporation took over. The works closed in 1992. This shows bricks from the brick press being guided off the conveyor and into a chamber of the Hoffman continuous kiln. The metal bar blocking the path of the bricks could be moved which would allow bricks to be transported further along the conveyor. With a Hoffmann kiln a fire was lit in the first chamber and the draught from a tall chimney drew the heat through each chamber. This system allowed bricks to be fired continuously as some chambers could be emptied or filled during the baking process. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
