Scope and Content Main production block from north-east, Coleburn Distillery, Moray Coleburn Distillery was built in 1897 by John Robertson & Son Ltd, possibly to designs by Charles Doig. It was bought by the Clynelish Distillery Company Ltd in 1916, and by Scottish Malt Distillers in 1930. Coleburn closed in 1985 whilst under the ownership of J & G Stewart of Edinburgh and its licence was cancelled in 1992. This shows the distillery with its long range of rubble buildings with tooled dressings, including a malt kiln and barley kiln with tiled pagoda roofs. These buildings were used for drying barley and malt using peated fires ventilated by the open louvres of the pagoda. The small corrugated iron structures on the roof are covers over grain elevators. Long after distilleries close, their whisky continues to be sold and gain in value with rarity. One thing it cannot do, however is age. Once bottled, a twelve-year-old Scotch will always remain a twelve-year-old, no matter how long it is kept. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
