Scope and Content Detail of arch on north wall of stable, Sibster Mains Farm, Highland Sibster Mains Farm has a large steading arranged around a square courtyard, dating variously from the late 18th century to the mid- to late 19th century and into the 20th century. It is thus a fine example of agricultural development through three centuries and is particularly notable for its 18th-century kiln barn. This shows a detail of the arch on the north wall of the stable showing the roughly hewn keystones which make up the arch. In front of the arch is a fresh manure pile or midden showing that the stable was still in use in 1998. Welsh slate predominated the roofing market in England and Scotland during parts of the 19th century. Slate is a fine-grained rock produced by the low-grade metamorphism of mudstone, siltstone and other argillaceaous sediments. Its perfect cleavage is due to the parallel alignment of platy crystals of micha and chlorite. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
