Scope and Content Arched entrance at north end of east range of steading, Sibster Mains Farm, Highland, from south-east Sibster Mains Farm has a large steading arranged around a square courtyard, dating variously from the late 18th century to the mid- to late 19th century and into the 20th century. It is thus a fine example of agricultural development through three centuries and is particularly notable for its 18th-century kiln barn. This shows the arched entrance at the north end of the east range from the south-east with roughly hewn keystones and a door above giving access to what was probably a hay barn or granary. The arch is a low pend leading into the courtyard. By the late 18th century Scotland led the world in the movement of 'improvement' - a vast and multi-faceted campaign aimed largely at agricultural improvement, but bound up with Enlightenment intellectualism as well as the development of capitalist and colonial wealth.
