Scope and Content East range fo steading, Sibster Mains Farm, Highland, from north-east Sibster Mains Farm has a large steading arranged around a square courtyard, dating variously from the late 18th century to the mid- to late 19th century and into the 20th century. It is thus a fine example of agricultural development through three centuries and is particularly notable for its 18th-century kiln barn. This shows the south end of the east range of the steading from the north-east showing a barn and small former bothy (left) which must have been entered from the courtyard side. The buildings are mainly roofed with Caithness slate, but the former dwelling also has Caithness flagstones at the eaves. In the course of the 18th and 19th centuries the central fireplace of houses came to be moved to the gables, or else the stone back of the house was built up to form a gable. Chimneys were made of wood or wattle plastered with dung and clay. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
