Scope and Content East range of steading, Sibster Mains Farm, Highland, from south-east Sibster Mains Farm has a large steading arranged around a square courtyard, dating variously from the late 18th century to the mid- to late 19th century and into the 20th century. It is thus a fine example of agricultural development through three centuries and is particularly notable for its 18th-century kiln barn. This is a general view of the east range from the south-east with a small single-storeyed dwelling at this end with two chimney-stacks. The bottom rows of slate have been replaced by traditional large slabs of Caithness flagstone. Many Caithness villages and farm names end in '-ster' (such as Lybster or Scrabster) which means 'farm' or 'steading' in Old Norse, harking back to the Viking invasions of this area of Scotland. The Vikings arrived here in the 9th century, and much of Caithness was ruled by the Norsemen until the 13th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
