Scope and Content Interior of granary, Tongue Mains Farm, Highland, from east Tongue Mains steading was built on the huge Sutherland estate which, by 1873, comprised almost 1.3 million acres, more than 90% of the county. It was built in 1843 to a design by Sir Charles Barry adapted by Alexander Coupar and was intended for use with the nearby Tongue House. This is a view inside the granary, above the carriage house and pend, looking from the east. The space was also used as a hay loft. Construction details for Sutherland estate granaries stipulated that the joists were to be thicker than elsewhere, were to be plastered and have skirting boards, presumably to stop grain becoming lodged in rough corners. The hatch from granary to shed below was to be provided with a padlock. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
