Scope and Content Pend and courtyard at steading, Tongue Mains Farm, Highland Tongue Mains steading was built on the huge Sutherland estate which, by 1873, comprised almost 1.3 million acres, more than 90% of the county. It was built in 1843 to a design by Sir Charles Barry adapted by Alexander Coupar and was intended for use with the nearby Tongue House. This shows a detail of the north side of the pend with the courtyard in front. The semicircular-arched opening is 2.75m wide and 3.25m high. A wooden gate across the entrance prevents animals escaping from the courtyard. The pend has a crowstepped gable topped with a pyramidal finial, and the loft door to the courtyard has a lifting beam above. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
