Scope and Content Interior of carriage house, Tongue Mains Farm, Highland Tongue Mains steading was built on the huge Sutherland estate which, by 1873, comprised almost 1.3 million acres, more than 90% of the county. It was built in 1843 to a design by Sir Charles Barry adapted by Alexander Coupar and was intended for use with the nearby Tongue House. This is a detail of wall fittings in the carriage house showing hooks likely to have been used to hang up harnesses. The stable was next to the carriage house, and had a hay loft above. According to the lease book of 1859, John Crawford, factor of the Tongue management, took on a yearly lease at a rent of £344 for 145 acres. Tongue was part of the Bighouse estate until 1829 when it was purchased by the Duke of Sutherland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
