Scope and Content South elevation of steading, Tongue Mains Farm, Highland Tongue Mains steading was built on the huge Sutherland estate which, by 1873, comprised almost 1.3 million acres, more than 90% of the county. It was built in 1843 to a design by Sir Charles Barry adapted by Alexander Coupar and was intended for use with the nearby Tongue House. This shows the central pend in the south elevation. The round-headed doorways in the flanking carriage houses are 2.28m wide and 2.55m tall. The main steading is constructed of squared, but not coursed, masonry with roughly dressed margins throughout. The arched entrance has a dovecot above within the crowstepped gable. From the moment the Leveson-Gower family wealth came into the Sutherland estate for the 'improvement' of their northern property, controversy raged over the policy of clearances, culminating in 1815 with the trial of estate factor, Patrick Sellar, for murder.
