Scope and Content Turnstiles, Celtic Park Stadium (Parkhead), No 95 Kerrydale Street, Glasgow On 6 November 1887, Celtic Football Club was formally constituted to alleviate poverty in Glasgow's East End parishes. Their first playing ground was at Springfield Road about 200m from the present site which they came to in 1892. Redevelopment work carried out by Percy Johnson-Marshall & Partners during the mid-1990s has brought the capacity to over 60,000. This is a detail of the turnstiles surrounded by brick walls. The record attendance for Celtic Park was on 1 January 1938, when a reputed 92,000 people turned out to watch Celtic play Rangers, though the figure is more likely to have been 83,500. In 1907 Celtic achieved the 'double' by winning the Scottish Cup and the League Championship in the same season, the first time the feat had been achieved. They repeated this success the following season. In 1937 Celtic beat Aberdeen in a Scottish Cup final, watched by a record crowd of 146,433 at Hampden Park. The attendance, sometimes reported as 147,365, remains a record for a club match in Europe. In 1939 Celtic won the Empire Exhibition Trophy by defeating Everton 1-0 at Ibrox after extra time in the final. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
