Scope and Content Interior of house in north-west range, Thrave Farm, Sanday, Orkney Islands This late 19th-century farm has not been used since the 1940s except for one of the dwellings which has been converted into a Scout hut. The steading is of an L-plan except the two ranges are detached from one another. All are of neat rubble construction in the vernacular Orkney style. This shows the interior of the house in the north-west range, from the south-west, displaying the old flag on the east wall marked, '5th ORKNEY, SANDAY' denoting the Scouts who now use the dwelling as their meeting hut. Note the furniture arranged round the fireplace. To the left are two traditional Orkney chairs, a straw-backed one leaning against the wall, and a wooden one to the centre. The Orkney straw-backed chair, unique to the Northern Isles, is still produced by craftsmen today. The backs are made from oat straw and the frames are now made from hardwood. The design results from the shortage of wood in Orkney and many other uses were found for oat straw including ropes (simmons) and baskets (cubbies or caisies). Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
