Scope and Content Thrave Farm, Sanday, Orkney Islands, from north-east This late 19th-century farm has not been used since the 1940s except for one of the dwellings which has been converted into a Scout hut. The steading is of an L-plan except the two ranges are detached from one another. All are of neat rubble construction in the vernacular Orkney style. This shows the north-south range from the north-east showing the dry closet (toilet) on the south end (left) with its low pitched roof of just two courses of giant flagstones almost intact. The byre roof next door has almost gone as has the dwelling roof, but the stable roof, with three courses of flagstones, is in relatively good condition. Dry closets, sometimes also known as ash closets, were used as toilets before the days of running water and modern sanitation. They were usually built some distance from the house and most of the other farm buildings. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
