Scope and Content Thrave Farm, Sanday, Orkney Islands, from north This late 19th-century farm has not been used since the 1940s except for one of the dwellings which has been converted into a Scout hut. The steading is of an L-plan except the two ranges are detached from one another. All are of neat rubble construction in the vernacular Orkney style. This general view from the road to the north shows the north-south range (left) with the dwelling nearest the other range and next to it a stable, byre and dry closet (far left). In front of this range are traces of another building probably built in the early 1940s for war purposes. The gable end of the workshop/store of the other range is to the right of the picture. The north-south range is not shown on the Ordnance Survey 25" map of 1872, but it is on the 1901 map. The highest point in the Orkney Islands is on Hoy, which rises to 450m above sea level, but the majority of the islands are low-lying and, in topographical terms, a lowland region.
