Scope and Content Distillery houses from north-north-west, Tormore Distillery, Highland Tormore was the first new distillery to be built in Scotland in the 20th century. It was designed by architect Sir Albert Richardson, a past president of the Royal Academy and completed in 1960. In 1972 the number of stills was increased from four to eight, and it continues to produce spirit for the 'Long John' blends. This shows a pair of semi-detached houses provided by the management of the distillery for its workers. The houses are large and attractive, with whitewashed walls, porches, steps up to the front doors, and oculus (circular) windows in the adjoining single-storeyed structures. Many older distilleries provided accommodation for their staff close by the works, or bunkhouses in case staff were trapped by bad weather in isolated districts. The introduction of increased mechanisation and computerisation within the industry has led to many distillery cottages being sold off as holiday homes as fewer staff are required to man the works.
