Scope and Content Coll Hotel, Arinagour, Coll, Argyll & Bute (now the Isle of Coll Hotel) The Coll Hotel, the only hotel on the island of Coll, stands at Arinagour, a tiny village and harbour on the south-west tip of the inlet of Loch Eatharna on the east coast of the island. This photograph of the hotel was taken by Erskine Beveridge c.1898. The building is a double-gabled, harled and whitewashed 19th-century house which stands looking south over the shores of Loch Eatharna against a bleak landscape of weathered outcrops of rock. It was extended in the 1880s to provide accommodation for 12 guests. Beyond Coll's flat rockscape were miles of long sands, stretches of sandy shore and beaches with snow-white sand that attracted Victorian holidaymakers to the island. In the late 19th century, visitors came to walk, swim and shoot (in season). Boats were easily obtained and fishing for saithe, lythe and mackerel was considered great sport as was fresh water trout fishing on some of the island's inland lochs and larger streams.
