Scope and Content Harbour, Lower Largo, Fife Lower Largo, a small fishing village on the east coast of Fife, sits within the wide crescent of Largo Bay overlooking the Firth of Forth. The Scottish photographer, Erskine Beveridge, photographed the harbour c.1890. The harbour is dominated by the three-storeyed harled bulk of an early 19th-century granary which sits on the quayside, its south-facing wing (right) converted as the Crusoe Hotel. The large open fishing boats drawn up alongside the pier are of the 'Fifie' type, a local Fife design of boat with tall masts and a straight bow and stern. The Crusoe Hotel was first occupied as the Harbour Inn in 1828. It later became known as the Crusoe Hotel in honour of Alexander Selkirk, Daniel Defoe's inspiration for his fictional character, Robinson Crusoe. Selkirk, who was born in Lower Largo in 1676, was the wilful son of a shoemaker who ran off to sea. After quarrelling with his ship's captain, he was put ashore on Juan Fernandez island, an uninhabited island in the Pacific Ocean, where he spent over four years.
