Scope and Content West side of kiln, Douglas Fireclay Works, Dalry, North Ayrshire Douglas Fireclay Works opened in 1914. By the time the works shut down in 1982, the company was owned by A P Green Refractories Ltd, an American company. Douglas Works specialised in refractory bricks, the heat resistant properties of which were needed in heat intensive industries like iron and steel. This shows one of Douglas Works' two Harrop tunnel kilns, situated on the east side of the works. Alongside are empty kiln cars which transported the bricks into the kiln, a type of furnace, which fired them as they passed through the heated tunnel. Kilns operated at temperatures over 1,000ºC. Bricks made at Douglas Works were marked with the name 'Douglas' and also the amount of alumina contained, a measure of the brick's heat-resistant qualities. After A P Green Refractories Ltd bought the company, the bricks were marked according to American standards. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
