Scope and Content Detail of firebox in tunnel kiln with burner unit removed, Douglas Fireclay Works, Dalry, North Ayrshire Douglas Fireclay Works was opened in 1914, taken over by Morgans in the 1960s and bought by A P Green Refractories Ltd in 1970. The works specialised in making refractory bricks, noted for their heat resistance. The raw material used was fireclay from local mines. The works were closed in 1982. This shows the firebox on one of Douglas Works' two Harrop tunnel kilns. As the name suggests, these kilns were tunnels through which the bricks travelled at a chosen speed to achieve the correct level of firing. The two kilns were approximately 100m long and were situated on the east side of the works. Tunnel kilns are recorded in France as early as 1751. When making their bricks, the Romans used small, rectangular kilns and moulded the bricks by hand. During the 19th and 20th centuries, mechanisation improved both output and quality in the brick industry. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
