Scope and Content 16-chamber continuous kiln from the north-east, Carsehead Brick Works, Beith Road, Dalry, North Ayrshire Ayrshire Brick & Fireclay Company established Carsehead Brick Works in 1907 and operated the business until at least 1928. The works had several owners from then with the Scottish Brick Corporation becoming the last owner in 1969. The works closed in 1977 and were mainly demolished c.1981. This shows the south-east front of the 16-chamber continuous kiln which was the original kiln for the works. The arches in the kiln were entrances to the chambers where the bricks would have been fired. The high-level metal conveyor to the left of the kiln leads to the machine wing (where raw clay was processed and moulded into bricks). With a continuous kiln a fire was lit in the first chamber and the draught from a tall chimney drew the heat through each chamber. This system allowed bricks to be fired continuously as some chambers could be emptied or filled during the baking process. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
