Scope and Content Dunure Harbour, South Ayrshire This shows the end of the north pier (left) and the west pier, seen from the end of the breakwater. Note the use of a natural headland to break the force of the prevailing south-westerly gales. Both design and construction are of the highest quality. Though the harbour was used by fishermen in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it is likely that its primary purpose was trading. There is a pair of large lime kilns above the harbour, which probably used imported limestone and coal. This harbour was built in 1811, and consists of a small rectangular basin formed by two piers and the quayed sides of a small bay. The piers have rounded ends, and the western one has the remains of a small lighthouse at the seaward end. A breakwater protects the harbour from northerly winds.
