Scope and Content Mural Monument to James McMin, Crail Parish Churchyard, Crail, Fife The old tree-lined churchyard of Crail Parish Church contains an important collection of mural monuments dating from the 17th, 18th and early 19th centuries. The Scottish photographer, Erskine Beveridge, made a detailed photographic record of the mural tombs and their epitaphs on a visit to the churchyard c.1890. This memorial to James McMin, schoolmaster of Crail, lies in the north wall of the churchyard. The monument, with a corbelled cornice, crenellated parapet and crowning shaft of stone, was erected in 1829 by 'a Number of his SCHOLARS as a Grateful Tribute of Respect'. James McMin (1750-1819), described as 'clever but eccentric' was appointed as schoolmaster in 1779. In the short list of applicants for the post, McMin and another candidate were found 'equal in their attainments', and so the examiners agreed to resolve the matter in a rather unusual way. Upon the principle that 'he who could teach well ought to eat well', the matter was settled at breakfast when McMin displayed such a much greater eating capacity than his rival that he immediately received the appointment.
