Scope and Content Mural Monument to Bailie George Moncreiffe of Sauchope, Crail Parish Churchyard, Crail, Fife The old tree-lined churchyard of Crail Parish Church contains an important collection of mural monuments dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. The Scottish photographer, Erskine Beveridge, made a detailed photographic record of the mural tombs and their epitaphs on a visit to the churchyard c.1890. This memorial to Bailie George Moncreiffe of Sauchope (1643-1707) is the largest and one of the grandest mural monuments in the churchyard. It is carved in orange stone, with scrolls at the sides and Ionic pilasters flanking a large central panel inscribed in Latin. It is topped by a broken pediment containing an elaborately carved coat-of-arms, presumably that of the Moncrieff family. On the central section of the base of the monument are carvings of winged souls, cherub heads with wings that represent the soul leaving the body at the time of death, and ascending to wait until the Day of Judgement when the body could rise to join it. This symbol of immortality is neatly balanced by the skull and crossed bones on the side wings of the base, symbols of mortality which act as a reminder that death comes to everyone.
