Scope and Content Memorial to Ann Stephenson, Crail Parish Churchyard, Crail, Fife The old tree-lined churchyard of Crail Parish Church contains an important collection of memorials dating from 18th and 19th centuries. The Scottish photographer, Erskine Beveridge, made a detailed photographic record of many of the headstones and their epitaphs on a visit to the churchyard c.1885. This memorial to Ann Stephenson (1749-83), wife of Andrew Gallaway, a stonemason of Crail, lies to the east of the chancel (background). At the top of the stone is a coat-of-arms bearing three castles, surmounted by a helmet and the mason's emblem, a square and compasses. The inscription on the stone is incised in capitals, with the last letter of the word at the end of a line being occasionally cut above the penultimate letter. Scottish headstones are unique in having carvings and inscriptions on both the east and west faces of the stone. The west (back) face of Ann Stephenson's stone bears the words in Latin 'MEMENTO MORI' which means 'Remember that you must die', and the following short epitaph in English: 'LIFE HOW SHORT, DEATH HOW CERTAIN, JUDGMENT HOW AUFUL, ETERNITY HOW LONG'.
