Scope and Content Hall, Kirkmay House, No 7 Marketgate, Crail, Fife (formerly Kirkmay House Hotel and now private flatted residential accommodation) Kirkmay House, a large Classical villa that stands within an extensive walled garden on the north side of Marketgate, was built in 1817 for Robert Inglis of Kirkmay. The Scottish photographer, Erskine Beveridge, photographed the house on a visit to Crail c.1885. The hall has an archway leading from the outer hallway to the stairway, a painted stone staircase with a cast iron banister and polished hardwood handrail. The walls are lined with paintings, plates and vases supported on little wall supports. A narrow carpet runner held in place with brass stair rods lines the staircase. In grand houses in the Regency period (1811-20), the main flights of the staircase would be built of stone, cantilevered from the wall, with steps defined by a bold moulding or 'nose'. Stone stairs were provided with a graceful mahogany handrail, supported on metal railings or balusters. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
