Scope and Content Consecration Cross, South Aisle, Crail Parish Church, Crail, Fife Crail Parish Church was built in the late 12th century as a simple Romanesque building consisting of nave and chancel, and was gradually altered and enlarged over the centuries. Very little of the original building remains, but a cross, carved on the west gable of the south aisle, dates from the consecration of the church in 1243. The cross was photographed c.1890 by the Scottish photographer, Erskine Beveridge. The west gable of the south aisle dates from the early 13th century, and contains a pointed window (inserted at a later date) with Gothic-style glazing. To the right is a consecration cross measuring 30cm in diameter, and below, a much worn stone bearing deep grooves made by medieval archers using the wall to sharpen their arrows. The church was consecrated by Bishop David De Bernham of St Andrews on 21st June 1243, and dedicated to the Celtic Saint, Maelrubha of Applecross. Later it became known as St Mary's, and in 1517, when it belonged to the convent or nunnery of St Clare at Haddington, it gained collegiate status. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
