Scope and Content Garden, Kirkmay House, No 7 Marketgate, Crail, Fife (formerly Kirkmay House Hotel and now private flatted residential accommodation) Kirkmay House, a large Classical villa that stands within an extensive walled garden on the north side of Marketgate, was built in 1817 for Robert Inglis of Kirkmay. The Scottish photographer, Erskine Beveridge, photographed the garden on a visit to Crail c.1885. This pretty Victorian garden borders the wooded churchyard of Crail Parish Church to the east, and is enclosed on that side by a high red brick wall with fruit trees trained to grow flat (espaliers) against it. A larger fruit tree (left) provides shade for a lady sitting on an ornamental cast iron garden seat. The tower of the church, possibly the oldest in Fife, dates from the early 13th century. The top belfry stage, with its crenellated parapet and squat octagonal stone spire, was added in the early 16th century. The garden was originally laid out by Robert Inglis, a tea and coffee importer who traded with the Indonesian island of Java, and was based for many years in the island's capital, Batavia (now Djakarta). On his return to Scotland he stocked the garden with plants brought back from Indonesia, and with pear, apple and other fruit trees bought from the best nurseries in Edinburgh.
