Scope and Content Engine and boiler house from south-west, Scar Farm, Sanday, Orkney Islands Scar is a coastal farm on the island of Sanday which is part of the Orkney Islands. Sanday is low-lying and almost treeless with only a few low hills to protect it from the wind. Its fertile soils are derived from flagstones of the Old Red Sandstone age. This shows the engine and boiler house which had a high door to the upper floor, now blocked off with fire bricks. The small concrete shed in front was the pump house, probably built in the 1950s. It rests on the curved edge of the cistern wall with a former boiler behind and the remains of a tall chimney beside it. The scarcity of trees on Orkney meant that construction relied heavily on available local stone. It could be cut easily into thin but strong slabs for building walls, floors and roofing. The steam engine chimney at Scar was made of handmade bricks, and is estimated to have stood 24m high. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
