Scope and Content Barn and kiln from south-east, Start Point Lighthouse Farm, Sanday, Orkney Islands Start Point Lighthouse Farm is on the eastern tip of the Orkney island of Sanday. Sanday is low-lying and almost treeless with only a few, low hills, making it difficult for sailors to distinguish the island in poor visibility. This shows the lighthouse-keeper's barn and kiln with the lighthouse on the left. The first lighthouse on this site was an ashlar tower, built in 1802. It was replaced by the present brick structure in 1870. Its distinctive vertical black and white stripes were painted onto it at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1635, Scotland's first lighthouse was built on the Island of May in the Firth of Forth. Built in 1802, Start Point Lighthouse was Orkney's second lighthouse, the first being on neighbouring North Ronaldsay. Designed and built as an unlit beacon, Start Point was fitted with Scotland's first revolving light in 1806. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
