Scope and Content McLeod Street façade from south-east, Heart of Midlothian Football Club, Tynecastle Park Stadium, Gorgie Road, Edinburgh Tynecastle is home to Heart of Midlothian (Hearts) Football Club, one of two major clubs in Edinburgh. Hearts was founded in 1874 and moved to Gorgie in 1881, opening its present ground in 1886. In 1903 a pavilion, stand and cycle track were built. The track was soon removed to make space for more spectators. This shows the back of the surviving Main Stand, off McLeod Street. Main Stand, on the east side of the stadium, was designed by Archibald Leitch. Building began in 1914 and, by the time it was finished in 1919, the stand contained seating for 4,000 but estimated costs had jumped to £12,000. At the outbreak of World War I in 1914, all the Hearts players signed up to join the forces, setting an example for thousands of their fans. Seven players were killed in action and few of their team-mates played for the club again. An annual service of remembrance is held at the Club's War Memorial in Haymarket.
