Scope and Content Steading, Kilmote Farm, Highland Kilmote Farm and steading was built on the huge Sutherland estate, which, by 1873 comprised almost 1.3m acres, more than 90% of the county. The house at Kilmote is dated 1767 while the steading dates from the 19th century when a great deal of money was being spent on 'improvements' to the estate. This is the steading seen from the north-west, showing, from right to left, the hen house, cattle shed with loft, threshing and straw barn, cattle shed and turnip house and, beyond, the northernmost workers' cottage. Attached to the threshing barn are the stone walls of the waterwheel house though the wheel and drive have been removed. The hen house adjoins the cart house. The window (right) is in fact a blocked door, but a door remains in the other side with a 'pop-hole', and nesting boxes still survive inside. The line of the lade for the waterwheel is still discernible across the field, and the sluice control mechanism still exists in the wall. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
