Scope and Content North Cottage, Kilmote Farm, Highland Kilmote Farm and steading was built on the huge Sutherland estate, which, by 1873 comprised almost 1.3m acres, more than 90% of the county. The house at Kilmote is dated 1767 while the steading dates from the 19th century when a great deal of money was being spent on 'improvements' to the estate. This shows North Cottage from the south. It contains two single-storeyed cottages which provided housing for farm workers. There is a chimney in each gable and two-thirds of the way along the clay ridge of the slate roof. Note the brick-built toilet on the south-east gable, added at a later date. According to James Loch's 'An Account of the Improvements on the Estate of the Marquess of Stafford' of 1820, Kilmote farm was granted to a tenant farmer for no rent and with an incentive of £250 to persuade him to give up Wester Helmsdale so that it could be 'lotted out to settlers from the hills'.
