Scope and Content Stairwell, Yester House, East Lothian (now a private house) Yester House, the home of the Marquesses of Tweeddale, was built in the early 18th century as a Classical mansion to the design of James Smith & Alexander MacGill. Over the next 250 years, the interior was altered and improved by several of Scotland's most renowned architects, including William Adam and his sons, Robert & John, and the 19th-century architect, Robert Brown. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the house in 1905. This surprisingly small stairwell is lit from above, and has elegant 18th-century plasterwork decoration by Joseph Enzer who came to Yester in 1736. It is framed at the corners by Ionic-style pilasters which rise from consoles at first-floor level and support an elaborate frieze and Classical cornice above. The walls are hung with family portraits including (centre) that of George Hay, the 8th Marquess, by the Scottish painter, Henry Raeburn (now in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh). George, the 8th Marquess of Tweeddale (1787-1876), was aide-de-camp to the Duke of Wellington during the Peninsular War in 1808 and was seriously wounded during the defeat of the French at the Battle of Vitoria in 1813. From 1814 to 1842 he was Governor of Madras, India, and commander-in-chief of the Madras armies. He was made a field marshal in 1875, and died as the result of an accident the following year.
