Scope and Content General drawing of timber hall, Doon Hill, East Lothian This is a reconstruction drawing by Brian Hope-Taylor of the British timber hall that stood at Doon Hill in the 6th century AD. The hall was destroyed by fire, possibly resulting from an attack by Northumbrian Angles in the 7th century. Only a small number of Dark Age halls have been discovered in Scotland, and Doon Hill is the only site known where a British hall was succeeded by one of Anglian design. In 1964-6, excavations by Brian Hope-Taylor on the top of Doon Hill revealed a palisaded enclosure surrounding the remains of two successive Dark Age timber halls- one built for a British chieftain, the other for an Anglo-Saxon landowner.
