Scope and Content Arbroath Harbour, Angus Arbroath was second only to Dundee as the principal industrial centre in Angus. Its principal industry was for many years the making of sailcloth and flax canvas, but it also had a notable engineering industry, as well as its renowned fishing and boatbuilding trades. Its harbour was remodelled in 1841-6 and 1871-7. This shows the wet dock formed in 1871-7 by remodelling the old tidal basin, from the north-west. The single pair of gates installed during the remodelling are on the right. The wooden fishing boats are typical of the local fleet in the 1960s and 1970s. The 1841-6 works involved the construction of a massive new breakwater pier to the south of the existing harbour, forming a large new tidal basin. In 1871-7 the old tidal basin was enlarged and converted into a wet dock, designed to accommodate cargo ships, but by 1970 used only by fishing boats. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
